Muirfield Village Condo Association (Mesa, Arizona) is the latest Association-Governed Residential Community to threaten owners and residents with fines for putting up lights and other holiday decorations.
Never mind that decorating has been OK for at least the past eight years. Now, all of a sudden, the new Board President, who “rents his condo out and doesn’t actually live in the community,” is calling the shots.
Another reminder that, when you own a condo, you own a Box of Air creating your interior spaces. Exterior spaces, including your front door, are collectively owned. Therefore, whoever is running the Association’s Board might choose to strictly interpret and enforce restrictive covenants forbidding exterior decor.
If you read the article and the comments below, you will see that, for some reason, the Board President doesn’t want decorations this year, even if lights are simply draped over door frames and not fastened to exterior walls.
These days, you can buy all sorts of non-destructive fasteners at your local big box store. Why not simply request that residents use them and refrain from using nails or thumbtacks?
How about a little common sense rather than threatening people with fines just days before Christmas?
Santa has some coal for stockings of certain Board members and the management company this year.
